Character Information: http://thehungergames.wikia.com/wiki/Johanna_Mason

Personality:
At first glance, Johanna is incredibly hostile. She goes out of her way to make people feel uncomfortable, and she absolutely loves to watch people struggling with how to react to her. She says and does inappropriate things: when Katniss first met Johanna, Johanna strips off in front of her to purposely make Katniss uncomfortable. She loves watching people squirm. She revels in causing people pain as well: Katniss notices Johanna’s grin when she sits on Katniss’ bed in District 13, quite clearly causing Katniss pain. Katniss also states that Johanna is a ruthless killer, something proven in Catching Fire as she fights the other tributes to the death.

Johanna is incredibly perceptive: she is well aware that she is disliked immensely by the Capitol, and indeed even by people in other districts, though she does absolutely nothing to even try to change that perception of herself. But from her very introduction, she proves her perceptive skills: she knows immediately how to get under Katniss’ skin, and this trait continues through to the series’ end. She is also thoroughly aware of the plot against the Capitol: she knows that the Districts are raising arms against Snow and beginning to rebel, and she realizes too that that is why she and the other victors, like Katniss and Finnick, are in the arena. It’s an easy way to silence potential troublemakers.

Johanna is a very jealous person as well: from early on, she’s incredibly hostile to Katniss in particular, and this is insinuated to be because Katniss has garnered a lot of the attention that used to be on Johanna as the youngest (current), and most recent Victor. Katniss’ behaviour in the arena, with the ‘tacky romance’ even manages to eclipse Johanna’s deceptions and eventual win – and Katniss managed to save her district-mate, something which Johanna continuously fails to do. Johanna actually admits to being jealous of Katniss because of the value on Katniss’ life as opposed to her own. Johanna has nothing, no family or friends, or even possessions of her own, where Katniss does. It’s something she’s particularly sensitive about, and will come into play in Ryslig too.

Johanna does not come with a filter – or else, she doesn’t seem to. She says what she thinks, and what she thinks is usually accompanied by an insult. She doesn’t seem to care whether people have a negative view of her: so many people do that it seems as if she’s given up even trying to change people’s minds. She’s outspoken: she’s the only one of the Victors to call the Capitol, and Snow, out on returning the Victors to the arena, and she does so with aggression. In the film, she’s seen swearing and screaming, and Collins has suggested that she had wished for this reaction in the novel, but had to water it down.
However, Johanna also knows how to keep a secret. She knows about the alliance with the rebels from before entering the arena. This in itself proves her trustworthiness: Finnick obviously felt that she could be trusted not to give the game away, and this is later confirmed in Mockingjay. Johanna reaches District 13 having been shaved bald and tortured by the Capitol to give away the rebels’ secrets, as evidenced by the scars covering her body. She apparently didn’t break, though, as the Capitol seem unaware of the rebels’ position and plans, and even exactly who are among them. This shows Johanna’s incredible strength of character, her determination and her loyalty to her friends.

Johanna has nothing left to lose in her own world, and this has made her incredibly bold. She is not afraid to speak out against the Capitol, and this makes her a liability. Unlike the other Victors, she is unaffected by the mockingjay calls in the arena: whilst Katniss heard Prim, and Finnick, Annie, she states that she wouldn’t have been hurt because there’s nobody left that she loves. The obvious implication is that the Capitol had Johanna’s family killed: Finnick revealing the Victor prostitution circle facilitated by Snow deepens the implication that Johanna had defied Snow over this, and as a result, her family were killed. It therefore makes logical sense that she partially blames herself for her family’s deaths, but it also explains the almost personal anger she has at Snow, and her determination to see him dead. It also goes to explain her attitude towards people: she doesn’t want to allow anyone to be close to her, or her to them, as she doesn’t want to allow Snow to be able to hold any form of manipulation over her, and she doesn’t want anyone to suffer for her actions. She tends to stick to her guns, which obviously resulted in her family’s deaths. It is obvious, then, that she feels she would do the same again, resulting in more people’s deaths. It also goes to explain why she doesn’t seem to have any support from her own district either.

One of Johanna’s iconic quotes is “love is weird,” and this basically sums up her confusion about displaying her emotions. She has no family left to love, and I don’t think she dares let down her guard now, so that Snow cannot use them to hurt her. She is well aware that she is a liability to anyone close to her, and they, in turn, are a liability to her. In a way, hating everybody is a way of protecting people from Snow. It allows her ‘freedom’ to say and do what she truly feels, with the only repercussions being inflicted on her. It’s almost self-sacrificing, in a way, though Johanna would scoff at such a noble thought. She definitely wouldn’t consider herself to be anywhere near as heroic as that.
Determination is one of Johanna’s strongest character traits. She is determined to show people she doesn’t care if they hate her with her acerbic attitude.
She is determined not to let Snow win by shouting her mouth and encouraging Katniss to make him pay. She is also determined to survive. In her first arena, she pretended to be a weakling until most people had died, and then showed her vicious streak, obviously going on to win. This also demonstrates her strategic nature: she is always plotting how best to survive, how best to cope in any given situation. In Catching Fire, during the training, she gives a demonstration of her viciousness, again in an effort to scare people away. Her grit and determination doesn’t leave her even in Mockingjay: she pushes herself through soldier training, despite being weak from being tortured.

In her canon, she is motivated by revenge against Snow: in Ryslig, this burning hate will be transferred to the Gods at least.

Roleplay Sample:

[Johanna wakes up with a growl, already reaching for her axe before she has even opened her eyes. Except, the axe isn't there and she's somehow soaking wet. Again. They must have made it rain through the night.]

Bloody typical, [She mutters.] If we're not going to die noisily, you'll kill us off with a disease. Flu. As if that’s never been done before.

[She opens her eyes, and glances around. She has no idea where she is: the last thing she remembers is falling asleep on the beach, when Katniss was supposed to be watching. "Mockingjay or not, i'm gonna rip her throat out," she thinks angrily to herself. The Gamemakers must have spun the board and flipped the location. And her axe must have got lost in the process. She looks around for something to arm herself with: there's a chair in the room, so she lifts it as high as she can, and throws it hard at the wooden floor. It splinters and she picks up a wooden leg. Someone though, will have heard that noise. Keeping flat to the wall, with her makeshift weapon lowered, she slowly turns the door handle and pushes open the door.

The symptoms have been coming on for days now, but Johanna has ignored them, refused to believe that any of this is actually true. She's still fairly certain that this is just another world that the Gamemakers have created for the Capitol's enjoyment. She's still fairly certain she'll run into Finnick and the others - unless they're already dead.

She hadn't realised, though, that the Capitol had the power to change a living person's body from such a remote distance.

When the Fog comes, Johanna stiffens all over. She grits her teeth as the change begins, as her skin, already rough and scaly, begins to flake, and is replaced by much harder, tougher skin. Still a normal flesh tone at first, it tightens and stiffens on her hands, settling to a reddish-brown, cracking, just like bark on an old, gnarled tree.

You have to be kidding me. You have to be FUCKING KIDDING ME! A tree? Be more fucking original than that!

It just shows her voice a little more.
