Johanna Mason
Series

OOC permissions
Backtagging: Yes
Threadhopping: Yes
Offensive subjects: Yes. I don't get offended or triggered by anything much, and Johanna is a gob anyway.

IC information
Species: Werewolf
Role/Faction: Beta, East End Pack (not that she's interested really)
Strength: Werewolf: 4, Human: 2
Magic: 0
Friends/Allies: None. She feels a camaraderie with her fellow werewolves and, should they be in trouble either individually, as a faction or like, politically, Johanna will have something to say about it. She might not be a friendly person or elicit sentimental feelings of kindliness from her pack, but she is loyal and she will defend them.
Enemies: She dislikes vampires, as they helped to basically destroy her original pack. She also loathes Snow, a human bad guy who drugged her and made her compete in dog fights for years. She's a prickly character and will generally act like most of the world is her enemy.
Relationship status: Are you kidding? Definitely single. It'd be like trying to hug a cactus with an axe on one of it's arms.
Notable physical characteristics: Patchy, prickly hair both as a wolf and in human form. Short - she's about 5'2 as a human, and small still for a werewolf. Johanna rarely smiles, and when she does, it's sarcastic, or sadistic, even. She's threatening; she swears a lot, and insults fall from her mouth more readily than compliments. Many would find Johanna hard to stomach. She talks about violence quite naturally, and her solution to problems are usually bloody action. She comes across as incredibly hard faced and not very approachable, really. She has a don't care attitude about herself, which masks the determination she feels to keep herself alive and even successful.
Notable magical characteristics: Johanna's not magical. She's not interested in magic, she doesn't care who has magic as long as it's not affecting her. She would quite happily kill for daylight jewellery as she has none and hates turning into a wolf.
Offensive subjects: She will talk about offensive subjects quite easily, and won't be at all bothered if people tell her about them. Johanna has spent quite a long time trapped in a violent world where she has been forced to murder other werewolves and dogs to stay alive, and where her parents have been murdered because of her refusal to become a prostitute. Johanna has a cynical view of the world and won't balk no matter how offensive anyone else can be. She will probably be the character to bring offensive subjects up, though if you let me know OOC that you would like something avoided, obviously I will do that!!
She's got a phobia of water, due to being tortured by it. She will find showering difficult and try to avoid the rain when she can. She will not find it funny if another character happens to push her into a pool or have a water fight with her.

Warnings: Johanna is a massive trigger warning. She has a big mouth and will try to offend people by talking candidly about offensive subjects, from murder to sex. If you want me to avoid anything, please, please let me know!

IC permissions
General physical violence: Go for it, but she will retaliate
Injuring this character: Go for it, but she will retaliate
Torturing this character: Go for it, but as soon as she is able, she will seek revenge
Killing this character: Please don't! I'd rather play Johanna for a bit.
Mental/emotional torment: She's got a lot in her head already but you can totally make it worse.
Physical intimacy: Good luck.
Romance: Again, good luck!
Using magic on this character: Definitely go for it, but again, as soon as she's free of any control she's placed under, she will seek revenge and it'll be hard. She does not want to be a puppet again.
Using telepathy/mind reading abilities on this character: Definitely go for it.
Using mind control on this character: Go for it, but do see two places above. She hates being made to do anything and she will want revenge on those who use her as a pawn in their games.

Notes/Other: If there's anything you'd rather avoid with Johanna, or don't want her to talk to your character at all, please let me know!! I totally won't be offended: I know she's a difficult character.

New history

Johanna was brought up in a werewolf clan in Delamere Forest. Their existence to the humans was completely unknown. To other clans, Johanna’s was known by it’s ancient moniker of District 7 (D7). Although outings to the cinema, parks and shopping centers were a regular feature of the clan’s life, the children, were cautious not to make friends with humans. They were home educated, with their education focusing on life skills needed to live with their curse as well as academia. Delamere Forest played a massive part in their education: Johanna learned how to navigate in a forest, to track, hunt and basic survival skills. Johanna learned how to use an axe, and her physical skills increased as she grew older. Folk tales about werewolves in the woods were rife throughout North England, but nothing had ever been proven.

Soon after Johanna’s 19th birthday, D7 was discovered. Years previous, a human, nicknamed Snow for his bleached hair, had witnessed his girlfriend’s murder by a werewolf. Absolutely distraught, and fully believing in the supernatural now, he vowed to rid England of its werewolf problem. He researched, and discovered the larger supernatural community, as well as a number of different werewolf clans. Knowing from experience about how powerful the clans were, Snow appealed to the vampires, swapping the promise of blood for manpower. When he approached D7 then, he was not alone. Vampires and humans stood together, united in their fear and irrational hatred of werewolves.

There was carnage. Many of the families managed to run: mothers fled with their young children to hide within the human society. Most of the men stayed to fight. Johanna wanted to stay too: she was close to her father and didn’t want to see the family separated. Despite her mother’s pleas, Johanna ran into the woodland to hide. She stayed there three or four days before emerging once more. She found her home in ruins, the vampires gone, their appetite for wolf blood quenched, and only a few men, both human and wolf, still there.

The first man she killed was an accident, kind of. He had spotted her and charged at her: she seized the nearest sharp thing, an axe, and swung it. His blood spattered across Johanna. Johanna felt bile rise, but swallowed it down. It was not the time to show weakness. She moved forward, looking for her dad: she presumed her mum and brother had got away – at least until she stumbled on the drained corpse of her brother. From there, Johanna saw red. Still clutching her axe, she went hunting.

She killed two more humans before she was captured by Snow’s thugs, disarmed and thrown into an oversized dog cage. Although Johanna protested and tried to escape, the fact remained that she was a non-transformed werewolf and relatively tiny compared to the thugs who had seized her. She was taken away without further ado.

She ended up on an isolated farm. There, she learned a little more about Snow. Beside his determination to seek revenge on the werewolf clans, Snow was also involved in drug running, which had allowed him to build up the fortunes needed to buy an isolated farm, and to gain followers. Dragged from the cage, Johanna was bound and dragged before Snow, who wanted to know everything, from her name and her clan and her parentage, to how murder felt. Johanna snapped short answers full of expletives, or gave none at all. She questioned the man’s actions, but he didn’t grant her an answer. Johanna was taken away.

Johanna spent a period of time locked in the farm house, in the dogs’ cage, force-fed wolfsbane. She could feel herself weakening. After several months, she was moved to a barn, and locked in another cage. She found that other werewolves were locked in too. As they began to talk, Johanna began to get a sense of what Snow was up to. Snow didn’t see the werewolves as human. They were lesser beings, disgusting and frightening, who needed caging and controlling, and who could provide fantastic entertainment. To reinforce this, Johanna had a microchip with a vetinary registration on it forcibly implanted in her arm. And then she learned of her fate. Dog fights. Pitbull vs pitbull. Werewolf vs werewolf. Pitbull vs werewolf. Johanna, known for her ruthless determination to stay alive, and for her skill with an axe, quickly became a favourite. Snow watched carefully, taking bets on the winners as he did so. Despite being a sideline interest, he found that it satisfied his lust for revenge, and brought in a tidy profit from the thugs he invited to watch.

Johanna shut her mind off to everything. After a while, sexual services were required of her, but she refused. This led to Snow revealing her parents being kept alive. Her continued refusal resulted in them being mauled to death by a few pitbulls whilst Johanna was forced to watch.

This settled Johanna’s determination to seek revenge on Snow. As controlled as she was, she was unable to escape, though she attempted it. Meanwhile, another werewolf, a girl often paired with Johanna for fights, managed to get out. Snow suspected Johanna of helping. Cattle prods and shock collars were used to torture her to submission: her head was shaved and she was doused with water in an attempt to make her give in. She refused. But the one escapee was enough: she alerted the police. Johanna, half dead, was saved from the barn. In the confusion, Snow escaped, though many of the gang members were arrested. After a stint in hospital, Johanna was released into protective custody. She had developed an addiction to her painkillers and a phobia of water from her time in the barn. Without her parents, and unable to go after Snow alone, she didn’t want to return to Delamere so decided to start again in London.

Other characters played: Lydia Bennet

Character information
Name: Johanna Mason
Age: 21ish
Date of Birth: 19th January
Canon: Hunger Games
Species: Werewolf.
Johanna is obviously a human in canon, but I have chosen to au her as a werewolf. She’s going to be a natural born werewolf, rather than a bite victim. She had her curse activated through the Hunger Games – more on that later! AUing her as a werewolf just instinctively felt right. She’s instinctive, she’s very grounded and she holds absolutely no illusions about the world around her. Like a wolf, she’s very much connected to her home. I also thought the pack mentality would challenge Johanna and add an extra element to her internal fight against herself.
Role: To wind everyone else up.
Ideally, Johanna wouldn’t want to join a faction. She’s been there, done it and got the scars to prove it.
Forced into it, the East End Pack would be an obvious choice for Johanna. She would be resistant to the idea of belonging to a pack as she struggles with being close to anybody, but as the main werewolf pack in London, it makes sense.

Another choice for her would be the Hillingdon clan, as the loose structure would be something she craved. I think she’d gravitate towards Hillingodon if just so that she didn’t have to be a pack member.
Wherever she ends up placed, her skillset and consequently her potential role, probably will remain the same. She is a good tracker, and skilled at murdering people. She’ll be a good assassin for the pack, and probably work up to be a protector of some sort. She just doesn’t want to do it. She’s sick of it all.

Rank: She doesn’t even want to be part of a pack, let alone a high ranking member. She’s a level 1, reluctant hanger-on at best.

Personality:

On first impression, Johanna is a difficult character to like. Her reputation as a ferocious and calculating killer makes people who know of her history wary of her. Johanna plays up to this: she is stand offish to those she doesn’t know. She’s not one to make idol chat or exchange pleasantries.

Johanna is direct, and tends to speak her mind, often in an aggressive manner, regardless of the consequences for doing this. Her bluntness has led to her family being executed, herself being held in disdain by almost everyone she is known to, and probably helped to prolong the torture she suffered at Snow’s hands. Johanna is acerbic: nearly every other sentence out of her mouth contains an insult. In ‘Catching Fire’, she refers to Wiress as ‘Nuts’, and goes out of her way to make sure Katniss knows Johanna hates her for the sob story she’s pushing to the public. She can be seen as unnecessarily blunt or cruel: she definitely gets a kick out of antagonizing people with inappropriate behaviour or remarks. For example, she is the first to start joking about the torture she and Peeta endured, much to every one else’s horror.

Johanna will quite often go out of her way to antagonize those that she doesn’t like; in the trilogy, this is showcased when she strips off in front of another rebel. She also directly antagonizes Snow, from shouting out about his hypocrisy to her derision about the Games.

She gives the impression that she doesn’t care about anything, and indeed, she confesses to another rebel that she’s not afraid of Snow, as he’s destroyed everyone she loves. Free from his hold, she’s allowed herself to be bolder than the other people in the syndicate can be. In a way, though, this is an act. Johanna pushes this image of not caring because she doesn’t want to care. The loss of her family has burned Johanna deeper than she would let anybody know, and she doesn’t want to feel the same way again. By keeping people at arm’s length, she feels a little more protected against their inevitable deaths. In a way, it’s protecting them, too. Johanna, although furious at Snow for executing her family, shoulders some of the blame herself too. She loathes showing vulnerability lest it be exploited, and she won’t often talk about her feelings other than anger, beyond making a black joke about them. She is quite determined to survive in the criminal underworld, despite the obvious problem that another rebel before anyone, is supposed to live. She fights ruthlessly for her life, and openly envies the support that other characters manage to gain with their less antagonistic personality.

Johanna is quite determined, though, that Snow, will not beat her. She retreats into a dark humour: she quite genuinely finds her inappropriate remarks funny. She refuses to cooperate with the syndicate, and despite her family’s executions, she ends even more determined to fight for revenge. She absolutely refuses sympathy, and feeds off the anger that Snow has built inside her. She is absolutely stubborn and will completely refuse to give in to anything she disagrees with, or even her feelings. Even when she feels like she’s falling apart, she will plaster a smile on her face and go out partying, just to spite everyone.

Johanna is a very goal oriented person. Unlike many of the other characters from her canon, she refuses to be a pawn in someone else’s plan. She makes her own choices, for better or for worse, and she refuses to be dictated to. She’s driven by thoughts of revenge, and this empowers her to fight for her freedom. Even being pushed back into a death fight has it’s uses: Johanna realized that Snow can control where she is, but not what she says or thinks, and she uses the (criminally) national platform he has given her to fan the sparks of rebellion she had already lit within the other victors, and even in Snow’s closest supporters by slyly questioning his motivation for putting the Victors, beloved in the syndicate, back in the games.

Johanna is sly and calculating. It’s demonstated in her sneaky strategy for survival in her first games. Some might regard her as untrustworthy and as a bit of a loose canon; certainly, this is the image Snow has tried to perpetrate for her. However, for those she regards as allies, Johanna is exceptionally trustworthy. Her knowledge of the rebels’ plan, and about the rebellion itself shows that her comrades regard her as completely loyal. It also shows her strength: not only is she physically strong, but mentally too. Most of the rebels knew about the possibility of them being captured and tortured by Snow to spill what they knew about the rebellion: evidently, she’s known to be strong enough not to give in. It’s not an accident that she was left behind: Johanna was arguably the strongest (or most stubborn) of those rebels who were left.

Johanna is smart and reliable: she was trusted to get Katniss out of the way of the real plan to get out of the arena, and to once again make her look innocent to the Capitol. She was also quick witted enough to get the tracker out of Katniss’ arm without telling Katniss why she was doing it, in case the plan went wrong. She is practical and resolute in her determination to get a given job done.

Because of the torture she has suffered, she is afraid of water, to the extent that she tries to avoid the rain and even showers/baths. She has also developed a dependency on pain killers as a result of her treatment and will be willing to steal/ beg / borrow for them.

Powers & Possessions: Johanna has the natural ability to turn into a wolf at the full moon. She has the associated powers of a werewolf.
Johanna doesn’t have much at all. She has a dirty grey hoodie, a black vest top, leggings and black boots that she wears almost constantly. She also has a couple of tatty duffle bags, containing her few bits of clothes, underwear and socks. Having literally just run, she has nothing else at all.

The unmarked car drops her off at some rundown petrol station a few miles north of the river. The officer glances over at the young woman sat next to him. Johanna in turn glares at her feet in a pair of beat up old Docs. Currently, her feet are resting on the edge of her chair. Her legs are wide , and her fingers play with the hospital band that’s still around her wrist.

“What? Is this it?” She glances up when it becomes obvious that the car isn’t moving.
The officer holds her gaze. “Johanna… Miss Mason…” His voice trails off as her glare intensifies.
“No, no. I get it. Get the bitch out of Snow’s place. Let her bleat, and pack her off to London with a few quid for the troubles. Sounds perfect.” Johanna laughs, the back of her beanie-covered head brushing the chair. She puts her feet down, and slowly, almost theatrically opens the door.

“Thanks for nothing, Plod.” She quips as she heaves herself free of the seat. She takes a moment to steady herself on the door. Even as she does, she rolls her eyes. ‘Fucking weak, Johanna’, says the voice in her head. ‘Fucking weak. And everyone is laughing at you.’
She hacks up and spits on the floor before reaching back into the car for the battered duffle bag that holds everything she owns.

“Have a good life,” the officer replies. He reaches across and pulls the door shut and drives off. For a moment, she stands quite still, watching as the lights retreat. Fucking perfect.

With a sigh, she swings her bag onto her shoulder and trudges off into the darkness.

She finds Hyde Park relatively easily. The stinking thing is hard to miss, really. It’s not home, but it’s better than nothing.

She reaches up to swing herself into the lower branches of a tree: she growls in annoyance when her grip fails and she falls on her backside with a thump. She tries again though, and again and again, until at last she gives up and kicks the trunk hard out of her sheer frustration. The only result is her toe hurting now too, a specific pain, unlike the dull ache that floats through the rest of her body.
Is it a good excuse to take an extra tablet now?

She bends to her bag, perhaps to retrieve a tablet, but a faint snicker catches her attention. She whips her head up, scanning her surroundings. Coming towards her is a small group of teenage boys, perhaps around eighteen or nineteen.

“Find something funny, Pizza face?” she asks the first lad, a smirk playing on her lips as she takes in the acne splattered on his cheeks.
“Shut up,” he growls as his friends snigger. Johanna rolls her eyes. Fucking kids.
“Or what?” She drawls lazily. She stands up, kicking her bag behind her. Raised to her full height, Johanna isn’t exactly threatening: she’s petite, and her enforced starvation and torture has done nothing for her. She looks ill and beaten, but her balled fists and the small pocket knife poking from between her fingers certainly mean business.”

“I would fuck off right now, Pizza Face, and take your girlfriends with you, before I show you what murder looks like.” She snarls, low and animalistic.

Pizza Face stares at Johanna for a full minute, before muttering to his mates, “Fucking loony tunes.” He turns to leave, and Johanna shakes her head. She lifts the knife to her eyeline, and stares at her eye’s reflection in the blade.
“Loony Tunes, eh?” She shakes her head again, and her mouth twists back into a snarl. “Fucking Loony Tunes.” She cackles, high pitched and mean, and throws herself under the tree, leaning back against the bark. She closes her eyes and breathes in the reassuring damp, earthy scent. This is her home now, and she’s going to make it work.

(no subject)

In the early 20th century, gang warfare between the supernatural and the non-supernatural underworld communities escalated. Murder and kidnappings were frequent occurrences and revenge was served bloody.
As the body count on both sides rose, a shadowy figure, Caracalla a witch, rose from the shadows and drew the supernatural creatures to him, either through promises or bribery, or, for the majority of the gangs, all out war. Through his powerful dark magic, he suppressed the gangs that sought to fought them, and kept them repressed through means of his 'Peacekeepers'. For his help in ending the turf wars, the American government gave Caracalla immunity from prosecution, allowing him to continue his criminal enterprises without fear of repercussion. Because of this, American authorities, already intent on getting rid of the supernatural trouble causers that haunted America, became a lot more focused on the other magical gangs scattered through the country. So Caracalla imposed more laws that 'benefitted' the rival gangs: all activity and money were to be processed through his core gang in Nevada, and in return for his protection from hostile forces, the gangs were to pay him in deference and in money each year.

Years passed, and Caracalla's control was firmly established. Any uprisings were quickly crushed, and gangs, once united through brotherhood and loyalty, began to fall apart. Kept together by force, suspicion of one another was high and any disrespect shown about Caracalla was swiftly and brutally punished.

In 1940, coinciding with World War 2, a war within 'Panem' was declared, with all but a couple of gangs, or districts as they were now called, rising up to rebel against Caracalla and become free again. The rebellions were soon crushed, and those Districts that had truly sought to overthrow him were met with devastation, both financially and in terms of their freedom. Caracalla tightened his grip so the Districts were caught in an iron grip. He began to lay down laws restricting their freedom; vampires were not allowed to create more without permission, werewolves were not allowed to activate their young, witches had their casting abilities restricted. The most devastating of all the laws, though, was the introduction of the Hunger Games. Every year, each district was required to sacrifice two of their children to fight to the death in an arena. The winner would receive glory, housing, food, and privileges for their district.

Fastforward 71 years, and Caracalla was long dead, replaced by a man called Snow. The Districts were completely separated now, and travel between areas was banned for all but those residing in the Capitol, Snow's inherited base in Nevada. The Hunger Games had continued, of course.
This year's crop was the usual mixture of 'Careers', children who had been sent to elite training academies from the favoured Districts of 1,2 and 4, and a rag-tag of foolhardy volunteers or scared children selected by lot from their District. Among them was an under grown girl of around 16 from District 7. Her name was Johanna Mason, and to the frustration of about everybody there, she hadn't stopped crying yet. What boring television. Stripped naked, it soon became evident that Johanna, like most of her District, was a natural born werewolf, though her curse had not been activated.

In the arena, as in training, Johanna cried, and chose to flee the brutal war that raged between the other Tributes. She stayed hidden in the undergrowth for days, listening as the boom of cannons indicated the other Tributes' deaths. And she counted.

When there were only five Tributes left, including herself, Johanna made her move. She tracked one Tribute to their riverside base, and stole an axe from them. Sensing the movement, the other Tribute awoke, and engaged in a violent fight with Johanna, which finished with her plunging the axe into the Tribute's chest, killing them. Stood splattered with blood, Johanna could feel her curse activating.

Grinning with delight in the TV control room at the unexpected turn of events, the Game Makers quickly created a full moon, forcing Johanna and her fellow District 7 comrade to transform. The murders then were in quick succession, before Johanna was forced into a showdown with Alex, the other werewolf. She was bitten. Part of her ear was ripped off. But eventually, Alex succumbed to her ferociousness. She managed to bite his next, severing the jugular and Alex died. Johanna had managed to win the Hunger Games.

Back in 'The Capitol', Snow had Johanna fixed up and granted her access to moonlight jewellery. She was taken on a grand tour of the Districts, and experienced luxuries that she had never experienced before.
However, after 6 months of niceties, Snow made clear his plan for her. As a winner of the Hunger Games, she was a powerful commodity. She was obviously strong, determined, resourceful… all the things that made her an asset to a criminal enterprise. But she was also attractive. And all combined, she could be used to court sponsors and attract business from other parts of the globe. Essentially, she would be a prostitute for Snow.

Johanna refused. Snow tried to reason with her, tried threats. Nothing. So Snow had her family brought to The Capitol too, and executed whilst Johanna was forced to watch. With her family gone, and essentially nothing to lose as far as she was concerned, Johanna still refused. As a punishment, she was stripped of her moonlight jewellery and banished from the Capitol to District 7.

The people there, though, were wary of her. The Capitol had been sure to make public her dissent, had twisted her parent's execution to blame it on Johanna. And, of course, her ferocious nature and her activated curse made people frightened to approach. At seventeen years old. Johanna was completely alone in the world.

The Hunger Games continued, and each year, in a show of sympathy and forgiveness, Johanna was forced to the Capitol. There, she met other Victors and became close friends with Finnick of District 4. He was a favourite of the Capitol. Johanna knew what that meant, but she knew as well, the hold that Snow had over Finnick. She vowed to harden her heart so he could never make her do anything she didn't want to do.

After watching the 74th Hunger Games, which Katniss and Peeta won, Johanna became embroiled in a secret plot to overthrow Snow and grant freedom to the Districts. She, along with Finnick and the others, were reaped for the Quarter Quell Hunger Games. For Snow, it was a way to get rid of the Victors that caused him trouble, Johanna included. For the viewers, it was like the Superbowl of the Hunger Games. And for the Districts, it was a reminder that nobody was safe.

She entered the arena again, and begrudgingly joined forced with Katniss and Peeta. Although she didn't know or understand the full extent of Beetee's plan to escape the arena, she knew enough to help. She laid out some copper wiring along with Katniss, before knocking the girl out, and cutting the tracker out of her arm. And then she ran. With the plan collapsing around their ears, Johanna knew she would have to be saved, or killed. Being caught by the Capitol was not an option: she knew too much and she would be tortured until she gave it up. So Johanna ran.

Unfortunately, though, in an arena, there weren't too many places to escape. Johanna was picked up, and taken to the Capitol, where she was tortured with electric shocks in an attempt to make her talk. Johanna refused, and the torture continued. She was helpless to escape.
Months later, she was rescued by her allies, emaciated and bald, and deathly afraid of water. Her recovery took place in District 13, a long forgotten gang located in the far North of America. She became addicted to pain killers and regained her strength. She trained in combat, but die to her fear of water, was unable to fight against Snow in the Capitol.

After Snow was captured, and the Districts essentially freed, Johanna made the decision to start over. She decided to head for London.

Character Information: http://thehungergames.wikia.com/wiki/Johanna_Mason

Personality:
At first glance, Johanna is incredibly hostile. She goes out of her way to make people feel uncomfortable, and she absolutely loves to watch people struggling with how to react to her. She says and does inappropriate things: when Katniss first met Johanna, Johanna strips off in front of her to purposely make Katniss uncomfortable. She loves watching people squirm. She revels in causing people pain as well: Katniss notices Johanna’s grin when she sits on Katniss’ bed in District 13, quite clearly causing Katniss pain. Katniss also states that Johanna is a ruthless killer, something proven in Catching Fire as she fights the other tributes to the death.

Johanna is incredibly perceptive: she is well aware that she is disliked immensely by the Capitol, and indeed even by people in other districts, though she does absolutely nothing to even try to change that perception of herself. But from her very introduction, she proves her perceptive skills: she knows immediately how to get under Katniss’ skin, and this trait continues through to the series’ end. She is also thoroughly aware of the plot against the Capitol: she knows that the Districts are raising arms against Snow and beginning to rebel, and she realizes too that that is why she and the other victors, like Katniss and Finnick, are in the arena. It’s an easy way to silence potential troublemakers.

Johanna is a very jealous person as well: from early on, she’s incredibly hostile to Katniss in particular, and this is insinuated to be because Katniss has garnered a lot of the attention that used to be on Johanna as the youngest (current), and most recent Victor. Katniss’ behaviour in the arena, with the ‘tacky romance’ even manages to eclipse Johanna’s deceptions and eventual win – and Katniss managed to save her district-mate, something which Johanna continuously fails to do. Johanna actually admits to being jealous of Katniss because of the value on Katniss’ life as opposed to her own. Johanna has nothing, no family or friends, or even possessions of her own, where Katniss does. It’s something she’s particularly sensitive about, and will come into play in Ryslig too.

Johanna does not come with a filter – or else, she doesn’t seem to. She says what she thinks, and what she thinks is usually accompanied by an insult. She doesn’t seem to care whether people have a negative view of her: so many people do that it seems as if she’s given up even trying to change people’s minds. She’s outspoken: she’s the only one of the Victors to call the Capitol, and Snow, out on returning the Victors to the arena, and she does so with aggression. In the film, she’s seen swearing and screaming, and Collins has suggested that she had wished for this reaction in the novel, but had to water it down.
However, Johanna also knows how to keep a secret. She knows about the alliance with the rebels from before entering the arena. This in itself proves her trustworthiness: Finnick obviously felt that she could be trusted not to give the game away, and this is later confirmed in Mockingjay. Johanna reaches District 13 having been shaved bald and tortured by the Capitol to give away the rebels’ secrets, as evidenced by the scars covering her body. She apparently didn’t break, though, as the Capitol seem unaware of the rebels’ position and plans, and even exactly who are among them. This shows Johanna’s incredible strength of character, her determination and her loyalty to her friends.

Johanna has nothing left to lose in her own world, and this has made her incredibly bold. She is not afraid to speak out against the Capitol, and this makes her a liability. Unlike the other Victors, she is unaffected by the mockingjay calls in the arena: whilst Katniss heard Prim, and Finnick, Annie, she states that she wouldn’t have been hurt because there’s nobody left that she loves. The obvious implication is that the Capitol had Johanna’s family killed: Finnick revealing the Victor prostitution circle facilitated by Snow deepens the implication that Johanna had defied Snow over this, and as a result, her family were killed. It therefore makes logical sense that she partially blames herself for her family’s deaths, but it also explains the almost personal anger she has at Snow, and her determination to see him dead. It also goes to explain her attitude towards people: she doesn’t want to allow anyone to be close to her, or her to them, as she doesn’t want to allow Snow to be able to hold any form of manipulation over her, and she doesn’t want anyone to suffer for her actions. She tends to stick to her guns, which obviously resulted in her family’s deaths. It is obvious, then, that she feels she would do the same again, resulting in more people’s deaths. It also goes to explain why she doesn’t seem to have any support from her own district either.

One of Johanna’s iconic quotes is “love is weird,” and this basically sums up her confusion about displaying her emotions. She has no family left to love, and I don’t think she dares let down her guard now, so that Snow cannot use them to hurt her. She is well aware that she is a liability to anyone close to her, and they, in turn, are a liability to her. In a way, hating everybody is a way of protecting people from Snow. It allows her ‘freedom’ to say and do what she truly feels, with the only repercussions being inflicted on her. It’s almost self-sacrificing, in a way, though Johanna would scoff at such a noble thought. She definitely wouldn’t consider herself to be anywhere near as heroic as that.
Determination is one of Johanna’s strongest character traits. She is determined to show people she doesn’t care if they hate her with her acerbic attitude.
She is determined not to let Snow win by shouting her mouth and encouraging Katniss to make him pay. She is also determined to survive. In her first arena, she pretended to be a weakling until most people had died, and then showed her vicious streak, obviously going on to win. This also demonstrates her strategic nature: she is always plotting how best to survive, how best to cope in any given situation. In Catching Fire, during the training, she gives a demonstration of her viciousness, again in an effort to scare people away. Her grit and determination doesn’t leave her even in Mockingjay: she pushes herself through soldier training, despite being weak from being tortured.

In her canon, she is motivated by revenge against Snow: in Ryslig, this burning hate will be transferred to the Gods at least.

Roleplay Sample:

[Johanna wakes up with a growl, already reaching for her axe before she has even opened her eyes. Except, the axe isn't there and she's somehow soaking wet. Again. They must have made it rain through the night.]

Bloody typical, [She mutters.] If we're not going to die noisily, you'll kill us off with a disease. Flu. As if that’s never been done before.

[She opens her eyes, and glances around. She has no idea where she is: the last thing she remembers is falling asleep on the beach, when Katniss was supposed to be watching. "Mockingjay or not, i'm gonna rip her throat out," she thinks angrily to herself. The Gamemakers must have spun the board and flipped the location. And her axe must have got lost in the process. She looks around for something to arm herself with: there's a chair in the room, so she lifts it as high as she can, and throws it hard at the wooden floor. It splinters and she picks up a wooden leg. Someone though, will have heard that noise. Keeping flat to the wall, with her makeshift weapon lowered, she slowly turns the door handle and pushes open the door.

The symptoms have been coming on for days now, but Johanna has ignored them, refused to believe that any of this is actually true. She's still fairly certain that this is just another world that the Gamemakers have created for the Capitol's enjoyment. She's still fairly certain she'll run into Finnick and the others - unless they're already dead.

She hadn't realised, though, that the Capitol had the power to change a living person's body from such a remote distance.

When the Fog comes, Johanna stiffens all over. She grits her teeth as the change begins, as her skin, already rough and scaly, begins to flake, and is replaced by much harder, tougher skin. Still a normal flesh tone at first, it tightens and stiffens on her hands, settling to a reddish-brown, cracking, just like bark on an old, gnarled tree.

You have to be kidding me. You have to be FUCKING KIDDING ME! A tree? Be more fucking original than that!
